Why is Kameeldoring sold by weight?

Our Kameeldoring braai wood comes as natural logs that vary a lot in size and shape, so weight is the fairest way to sell it. Blue Gum and Black Wattle are sold by piece count. Chat to us on WhatsApp for current options.

The wood

Our three woods, and what each one is good for.

How are your three woods different?

Kameeldoring is the ultimate braai wood: it burns very hot and long, leaves world-class coals, and is always bone dry and ready to burn. Blue Gum is our fireplace and stove wood: it burns hot and clean, with little ash. Black Wattle is our economical braai wood, with decent coals, a lot like Rooikrans.

The full comparison: Blue Gum vs Black Wattle vs Kameeldoring.

Is Black Wattle like Rooikrans?

It performs very similarly. Our Black Wattle makes decent braai coals and is our economical braai option. (We don’t sell Rooikrans, but if you like Rooikrans, Black Wattle is the one to try.)

Where does your wood come from?

We supply premium, responsibly sourced firewood. Our Blue Gum and Black Wattle are harvested from sustainable plantations.

Fires & stoves

Which wood for which fire, and a few firewood basics.

Which wood is best for a braai?

Kameeldoring is the ultimate braai wood: it burns very hot and long and leaves world-class coals. For an economical braai, Black Wattle makes decent coals and performs much like Rooikrans.

Which wood should I use in my indoor fireplace or closed-combustion stove?

Blue Gum is our fireplace and stove wood. It burns hot and clean with very little ash. For long, hot overnight burns in a closed-combustion stove, Kameeldoring is great. It burns very hot, so load sensibly and follow your stove’s manual.

Can I braai with Blue Gum?

You can, but it’s not what it’s best at. Blue Gum gives lots of flame and leaves very few coals, which is great in a fireplace but not ideal under a grid. For the braai, pick Black Wattle or Kameeldoring.

Can I burn only Kameeldoring in my closed-combustion stove?

Kameeldoring is excellent for overnight, high-heat burns, but it burns very hot. Don’t overload the firebox, use the air controls, and stick to your manufacturer’s guidelines. Many people mix it with Blue Gum for a steadier fire.

What should I never burn in my fireplace?

Don’t use pine as your main fuel, and never burn treated, painted or varnished wood, old pallets, plastic or household rubbish. They can give off toxic smoke and leave sticky deposits in your chimney. Stick to proper firewood.

How can I tell if firewood is dry enough?

Well-seasoned firewood has a moisture content below 20%. A simple moisture meter on a freshly split face is the surest test. Dry wood also shows cracks on the ends, feels lighter, and knocks with a hollow “clack”.

How should I store firewood?

Outside, off the ground on pallets or bricks, with the top covered and the sides open so air can move through. Keep it away from the house walls. Bring only a few days’ worth inside at a time.
