Straight talk about Blue Gum
Blue Gum, or bloekom as most of the Boland calls it, is our wood for indoor fires.
Why Blue Gum for indoors
Indoors you want the heat without the mess. Blue Gum burns hot and clean, with minimal ash and coals, so there’s less to scoop out the next morning. That’s why it’s our pick for an open fireplace and for a closed-combustion stove on an ordinary winter evening.
Our Blue Gum is harvested from sustainable plantations.
How it burns
In an open fireplace it gives you a hot, clean fire. In a closed-combustion stove it’s an easy everyday wood: load it the way your manual says and let the air controls do the work. For long, hot nights, mix in some Kameeldoring.
Can I braai with Blue Gum?
You can, but it’s not what it’s best at. Blue Gum burns hot and clean with minimal coals: lovely in a fireplace, not ideal under a grid. For the braai, take Black Wattle for an economical fire or Kameeldoring for the best coals. Our braai wood page helps you choose.

Blue Gum questions
Is Blue Gum good in a closed-combustion stove?
Yes, it’s our everyday stove wood: hot and clean, with minimal ash. Load it the way your stove’s manual says. For long overnight burns, ask us about Kameeldoring, which mixes well with Blue Gum.
Why does my stove glass go black?
Usually the air is turned down too far, too soon, so the fire smoulders and the smoke sticks to the glass. Give it plenty of air at the start, then close it down gradually. Your stove’s manual has the details.
